CAPTAIN KYLE BACKS TWINS

LEICESTER skipper Kyle Howarth is backing the Thompson twins to progress again in 2022.

The club have once again included Dan and Joe in their Championship side – and Dan has already caught the eye of Premiership Sheffield and will be included in their squad as a fringe rider.

Howarth has agreed a new deal to return to the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena at Beaumont Park and is keen to offer his help and advice to the youngsters.

"I think the Thompson twins will kick on next season,” he said. “It was their first season in the Championship so that’s out of the way now and they have visited all the tracks and now they know what they have got in front of them when they go away!

“They’re young and they can ride a bike so I don’t see why they can’t kick on.

“They could be the difference a few times next season and as I say they will be more experienced on away tracks when we’ll need them to score points.”

Howarth is in training for the new season with a busier fixture list lined up for the Watling JCB Lions.

They are included in a group of four teams alongside Newecastle, Redcar and Scunthorpe in the summer tournament with the group winners heading to Sheffield for a three team final.

They have also drawn Birmingham in the Knockout Cup which means a minimum of 14 home meetings at Championship level.

The club held a hugely successful open day at the track on Saturday with a good response to season ticket sales.

“The more meetings the better,” said Howarth. “It probably means regular Saturday night speedway at Leicester and that has to be a good thing.”

* PLANNING for the Leicester Lion Cubs National Development League team is well underway.

The club are expected to name their riders over the next two weeks.
